Z. Sharon Glantz

Live Virtual Theater

Because sets and costumes in the virtual world of Second Life can defy the realities of size, shape and physics, performances could be dynamic. This requires specialized technical builders. Z. Sharon Glantz worked with and relied on their artistry and skill. Building and operating the animation of the avatars also requires expertise and coordination from actors. The learning curve for comfortably moving can also be steep, especially at first. Audiences known IRL (in real life) could end up more frustrated than entertained by a performance, but residents find it thrilling. Performances could be filmed, but like in movies, the point of view of the filmmaker dictates how the content is understood. Many tried filming performances, but their final products rarely reflected the excitement of the moment of performance and fell flat.

In the Pink

Actor/Writer/Set Designer

The first year V (fka Eve Ensler) started V-Day to start a global movement to end violence against women, theaters across the world performed her play, The Vagina Monologues. HBO refused to allow a Second Life performance, claiming it was too close to a film. However, V allowed the group to perform one of the monologues. Women from all over the world on Second Life wrote and performed their own monologues, donating all revenue to V’s organization.

Z. Sharon Glantz performed V’s monologue, wrote one of the other monologues and designed the slides that served as backdrops to each monologue.
